Caramel apples

Caramel apples are a classic fall treat, perfect for Halloween and other autumn celebrations. A step-by-step guide on how to make caramel apples:

Ingredients:

- 6-8 medium-sized apples (Granny Smith, Honeycrisp, or your preferred variety)

- 1 1/2 cups granulated sugar

- 1/2 cup light corn syrup

- 1/2 cup water

- 2 tablespoons unsalted butter

- 1 cup heavy cream

- 1 teaspoon vanilla extract

- Wooden sticks or lollipop sticks

- Optional toppings (chopped nuts, chocolate chips, sprinkles)

Instructions:

1. Prepare the Apples:

- Wash and dry the apples thoroughly to remove any wax or residue. Remove the stems and insert wooden or lollipop sticks into the top of each apple. Set them on a parchment-lined baking sheet or tray.

2. Make the Caramel:

- In a heavy-bottomed saucepan, combine the granulated sugar, light corn syrup, and water. Stir to combine.

- Place the saucepan over medium-high heat and bring the mixture to a boil. Once it's boiling, stop stirring and continue to boil until the mixture turns a deep amber color. This can take about 10-15 minutes. Be careful not to burn the caramel.

- Remove the saucepan from heat and add the unsalted butter. Stir until the butter is completely melted.

- Slowly and carefully pour in the heavy cream while continuously stirring. The mixture will bubble up, so be cautious.

- Return the saucepan to low heat and cook for an additional 2-3 minutes, stirring constantly, until the caramel thickens and reaches the desired consistency. Stir in the vanilla extract.

3. Dip the Apples:

- Carefully dip each apple into the hot caramel, twisting and turning to coat the apple evenly. Allow any excess caramel to drip back into the saucepan.

- If you want to add toppings like chopped nuts or chocolate chips, do so immediately after dipping while the caramel is still warm.

4. Set and Cool:

- Place the caramel-coated apples back onto the parchment-lined baking sheet and let them cool at room temperature. The caramel will harden as it cools.

5. Enjoy:

- Once the caramel has completely set, your caramel apples are ready to enjoy. You can serve them immediately, or you can wrap them in cellophane or wax paper for storage.

Caramel apples are a delightful treat, and you can get creative with various toppings and drizzles to make them even more special. They are perfect for Halloween parties or as a sweet indulgence during the fall season.
