A simple recipe for Jowar (Sorghum) Millet Khichdi:
Ingredients:
- 1 cup jowar (sorghum) millet, washed and drained
- 1/2 cup split yellow moong dal (lentils), washed and drained
- 2 tablespoons ghee or oil
- 1 teaspoon cumin seeds
- 1 teaspoon mustard seeds
- 1 teaspoon grated ginger
- 2-3 green chilies, finely chopped (adjust according to taste)
- 1/2 teaspoon turmeric powder
- Salt to taste
- 4 cups water
- Fresh cilantro leaves for garnish (optional)
Instructions:
1. Heat ghee or oil in a pressure cooker or a large pot over medium heat.
2. Add cumin seeds and mustard seeds. Let them splutter.
3. Add grated ginger and chopped green chilies. Saute for a minute.
4. Add washed jowar millet and moong dal. Stir well to coat them with the spices.
5. Add turmeric powder and salt. Mix well.
6. Pour in 4 cups of water and stir everything together.
7. Close the pressure cooker lid or cover the pot with a lid.
8. If using a pressure cooker, cook for about 4-5 whistles or until the millet and dal are cooked thoroughly. If using a pot, cook covered for about 20-25 minutes or until the millet and dal are soft, stirring occasionally to prevent sticking.
9. Once done, let the pressure release naturally if using a pressure cooker.
10. Garnish with fresh cilantro leaves if desired.
11. Serve hot with yogurt, pickle, or any side dish of your choice.
